23. ZEN

Our lives are mosaics of emotion.
Together, we spin worry and joy.
The implanted anxieties seek survival;
the past, revival; growing up more difficult.

Every day, new. Discovery is unfamiliar.
Not so boxed, we face at every moment
an infinity of choices. Reject all, and
there remains no guide firm in anything.

Freedom is a harried cross.
Self-imposed. And then the anxiety,
trying not to feel self-pity.
Overloaded. No circuit room left for pity.

Reality is a harsh morning light.
Ago, morning light was harsh reality.
In freedom, also, sharp reversals.
The beat remains steady. We?

—Avoid unnecessary concern for self.

Amazon e-book page Thank you for reading. If you love it, tell your friends. Please post a favorable review at Amazon, Good Reads, and other online resources. If you want to thank the author, you may also buy a copy for the low price of a cup of coffee. It's called Read-a-Latte: similar (or lower) price as a latte at your favorite coffeeshop, but the book lasts forever while the beverage is quickly gone. Thank you (JTC). PS: I wrote most of these poems (except the title poem, October Leaf) as a teenager, so I published them under the pseudonym A. T. Nager.
