= SAD LADY LAKE =

Dark Fantasy

by John Argo

4.

title by John Argo"Easy does it, Kurt," a man grumbled. "Easy there, into the boat, young lady."

"There, Mac," said another voice. "Not a minute to lose now."

Jill could not see; all she heard was their voices; she felt their cold wet bodies against hers. She did not resist. She knew now she would find Timmy one day; it was just a matter of time, and that relieved her deeply. She winked out.

When she awoke, it was broad daylight.

She sat up with a start. "Tom?"

"Easy," he said taking her hand. "You're safe and well, in a hospital."

She lay back. It was not Tom's fault, she thought. She tried to remember, but could only conjure a black ball of confusion full of wind, water, and lightning.

"When the storm started to hit, I got a whole bunch of people around the edge of the lake looking for you."

Jill said: "Two men pulled me out. Let's see. Kurt and, and, Mac I think."

Tom shook his head. "It was the sheriff who found you. You had wandered out of the lake and onto the highway above waving your arms."

Jill frowned. It all sounded wrong. She had a memory of herself staggering to the door of the store, with two men supporting her.

The door opened, and in came a male nurse bearing a water pitcher. "How are you feeling?" he asked. He was an Native American in his fifties, with silvery hair and a strong voice.

"Fine," Jill said. She added: "Confused."

Chuck Chowder, his name plate read. Chuck Chowder got a funny look on his face. "We think you got whacked by a little stray lightning, just enough to give you amnesia. I don't know how you made it ashore though."
