New Concept Today: Galley Crowd

Something To Think About: Crowd Galleying. My reward for your reading experience is that Clocktower Books has reached another reader (hopefully a happy one). Thank you for that. I'm guessing that other writers will be doing this soon, because these are tough times with flooded markets in all retail sectors. As is the case with Wikipedia and other free resources online, it costs money to do business. I will *not* ask for donations, not to worry. My main concern is that there are already so many good people like yourself downloading PDFs of our Classic Reads —e.g., Girl, Unlocked (Neon Blue, Suspense Novel)—that the cost from the hosting service for all those downloads may become prohibitive. What to do?

Easy Solution: Pitch in, Buy a Book. Rather than go to crowdfunding and other noble efforts to defray download and hosting costs, it occurred to me in the shower this morning (14 Nov 2018; best place for singing & ideas—JTC) that the easiest thing would be to pitch the free reads with just a slightly different twist than 'read free or buy' (an old Clocktower Books motto). If you like what you read, why not crowdfund right then and there (or later) by buying one or more books (print or e-book)? Most e-books are $2.99, the price of a coffee. Unlike a beverage, a book means hours of reading pleasure, and stays with you forever. I've been an Amazon Affiliate since 1998, and Amazon will safely handle the complete transaction at their site, as they do any others.

Concept: Crowd Galley. Again, readers are under no obligation. As with Wikipedia and other free resources online, this is a one-time only pitch to your sense of fairness and generosity. If you wish to contribute, don't send money. Just buy a book, please. Follow buy-link to the Amazon page for your book. The spiel happens here, the deal happens there. Totally safe. Everyone wins.

Concept: Read-a-Latte This is an old Clocktower Books motto. It reflects the economical nature of e-books. For the price of a cup of coffee at your favorite coffeeshop, you can buy a digital book and have hours of enjoyment. A cup of coffee is gone in minutes. Books (e- or p-) are with you forever.

Concept: Read Free or Buy. This is another old Clocktower Books motto. It borrows from the New Hampshire state motto, leaving the threats of violence & mayhem behind. Back in the 1990s, before e-commerce, we could only offer (HTML) books free to read online. Then e-commerce arrived, along with hand-held devices starting with the Rocket eBook in 1998, and soon it was 'buy or fly.' Starting November 2018, Clocktower Books is launching a new concept on all three legs of the tripod: e-books, p-books, and HTML novels.

What To Call Things? I want to call this Galley Crowd (to encompass concepts like Galley Funding, Crowd Galleys, Galley Crowds, or whatever). Who cares? If you want to help out, please buy a book. Help out by reading in the first place. Help out by leaving a nice review at Amazon, Barnes & Nobel, Good Reads, etc. I no longer do social media, so start a Facebook page for us. Yes, it's 'us'. The Crowd. The readers who gather here at the free copy bar for a sip and a yip. Yip is from Galley Dog. Or a meow, from Galley Kitty, Feef, and the other cool cats who hang out here. Now what to call these HTML novels? I'm not calling them HTML books because those are typically books about how to code in HTML; and H-Books is some kind of fast-flying Asian car; so I'm calling them HTML novels. Oops, the shower is off, and the flow of ideas has grown cold. More later! Read and enjoy! Help out if you can! Thanks!—JTC).

About Galley City: All the galleys (books, ARCs) available to you on this site are absolutely free to read and enjoy. We call them 'the HTML novel'*. Today's p-book and e-book markets are flooded with things to buy. Readers and writers often feel lost in a sea of choices. Clocktower Books (Owner: JTC) is keeping a foot in each of those worlds (p-books and e-books) but we are (re-) introducing a Third Wave: HTML novels just like they were before e-commerce: free to read online. It's anonymous: no tracking, no cookies, no cupcakes, not even a free breath mint.

*HTML Novel: It's a concept Clocktower Books pioneered starting 1996 to spread the incredible new wonder of Web-based publishing. We quickly had avid readers around the world on every continent, clamoring for more. We still have on file their emails, coming from places like Johannesburg, South Africa; Cologne, Germany; Paris, France; Luxembourg; Taiwan; Australia; New Zealand; Brazil; Mexico; and many locations in the USA and Canada. Then e-commerce and e-books arrived, and we all moved on.
